What is StyleWriter?
One issue with changing your writing style is how to apply what you’ve learnt once you’re back at your desk. It’s easy to slip back into old habits. We recommend using StyleWriter, the plain language editing tool, as a way of reinforcing the principles of good business writing and legal drafting. For organisations that want to take their written communications seriously, it’s the best way to ensure a consistent approach. We are happy to support businesses wanting to bring in a plain language policy.
How does it work?
It works in a Word document a little like a spell-checker, but it does so much more. You finish writing your document, click on StyleWriter and it scores your work for things like style, sentence length and use of the passive voice and then works with you to improve the style, highlighting issues and often offering suggestions to improve your writing.
It has three different editions, depending on your needs:
“I don’t want anything too complicated” – The Starter edition might be for you.
“My business has a strong house style” – Consider the Standard edition, which you can tailor to reflect house style. It will also collate people’s scores, which can be useful in supporting an organisation’s plain language drive.
“I want to take my writing to an even higher level” – Try the Professional edition, which includes the Editor’s List. This will give your writing even more variety and impact.
